Of love unsurpassed
Between human women and unicorn man,
In a land older than any sung about.
A unicorn prince lived named Morning Star,
Unique among all others
For he was golden like the sun
And flew on hooves of shining silver.
He fell for a human women,
With hair of chestnut and eyes of blue
The daughter of a tavern keeper,
With magic in her blood.
She was Eliza, the youngest of two,
Her elder sister, Muriel was pretty and spoiled.
Their father Joseph viewed his eldest as a precious jewel
While Eliza he ignored.
Joseph and Muriel were proud folk,
Feeling a tavern was below their station.
Joseph felt that Muriel should marry
A Lord to raise his station.
Eliza however was modest and kind,
Though she did most of the work
She still found time to visit others less fortunate
And heal them as best she could.
That was why Morning Star loved her so
She was one of the few,
Who had healed his kind,
And asked nothing in return.
With a spell Morning Star transformed himself
To a human man,
Blond of hair with eyes of blue and handsome too,
Thus, he approached the tavern.
Unfortunately for Morning Star,
He was attacked and robbed.
Left injured, he crawled to the tavern
And fell unconscious at the door.
Joseph left his care to Eliza
Who viewed him with love and kindness,
But Muriel thought him handsome
And demanded he be hers.
Muriel supplanted her sister,
Every time Morning Star awoke
Departing when he slept.
Feeling it beneath her, to care for any man.
Confused, Morning Star feigned sleep,
And saw his love at last
He opened his eyes and smiled at her.
Eliza rose to fetch her sister, but stilled at his gentle hand.
"Why leave?" He asked, "what is your name?"
"Eliza," said she, "My sister, Muriel, desires.
She is blond and pretty
While I am, only plain."
"You are sweet and kind," countered he
"While Muriel is haughty and proud.
I would have you any day
Over one with no love in her frozen heart."
"Who are you?" Eliza asked
"Who can talk so about love?"
Fear colored her tone
As did her still growing love for him.
"Morning Star, of the unicorns." He replied.
Eliza gasped. "How do you appear thus?"
"With magic Eliza
With magic I can teach you," Morning Star replied.
He left the next day,
To set up camp in the surrounding forest
Eliza visited every day, learning magic
And falling in love ever more.
Days later, men visit and stay
A cruel lord of a cruel land
Seeking something special,
A bride with magic in her blood.
He, John, had sensed one, here,
Now John watched the village women
Waiting for one,
With Magic in her blood.
A plain woman entered
John would not have bothered
But he sensed it.
Magic in her blood.
"Who is she?" John asked Joseph
As Muriel served ale
Trying to catch his eye.
"Eliza, my youngest," Joseph replied.
John sauntered over to Eliza, to Muriel’s consternation.
"Why do you hide, lady?" He asked
Eliza stared into cold green eyes in a handsome face
Framed by black hair, and shuddered.
"I, do not care for company my lord," Eliza quivered
For she could sense his black heart.
"I believe I love you," John said clinically
"Come, and I will make you my lady, forevermore."
"And if I don’t love you?" Eliza countered
"Then I shall take you anyway," John smiled unpleasantly.
"One way or another
I will make you mine alone."
John stood and called
"Joseph! I officially ask for Eliza’s hand.
What do you say?
Yes or no?"
"I say yes." Joseph smiled
"She will be well taken care of,
But I fear, I cannot provide a dowry."
"None is required." John replied smiling haughtily.
"You are mine." John smiled unpleasantly
"I refuse!" Eilza screamed, in horror
"You will!" Joseph snapped back
And dragged Eliza to her room.
"Here you will stay, until you are wed,"
Joseph told her angrily.
"Then throw away the key, I will never marry John,"
Eliza retorted, furiously.
"Yes you will," Joseph said ominously
Locking her door
Leaving no escape for Eliza
By normal means anyway.
From her bodice
Eliza pulled out a crystal pendent
Given to her by Morning Star
To call him when she needed him.
Using the crystal, a plan was formed
So both might marry
For Eliza loved Morning Star
And had done so, now, for many months.
The day came
And Eliza was led out
Dressed in bridal white
The crystal pendent around her neck.
John steps forward, smirking
To claim ‘his’ bride.
When Morning Star appears
Running towards Eliza.
As Morning Star runs by
Eliza forms a small hurricane, which lifts her high
And allows to fall onto Morning Stars back
And escape immoral John.
Morning Star flies high
Leaving the others behind
They travel far
To return to Morning Stars herd.
Once on land
Eliza transforms
Into a unicorn mare
Of chestnut, like her hair.
They marry
According to unicorn rules
And lived happily
Forevermore.
Of Joseph, he dies in a tavern fire
Muriel never marries, no man wants so proud a woman
And John is killed in battle
Their dark lives finished, forevermore.
